Some ideas about therapy show up so often in fiction I find myself wondering how many writers are using them deliberately and how many just don't realize they're inaccurate. Here are six of the most common, along with some information on more standard current practice.
1. You lie on a couch
Reality: Therapy clients don't lie on a couch; some therapists' offices don't even have couches.
So where did this come from? Sigmund Freud had his patients lie on a couch so he could sit in a chair behind ...Read the rest of this entry »

If you want to help somebody suffering from depression or whom
you suspect is depressed, following are the three simple things
you can do.
1. Understand the perspective and the situation of the
person.
2. Help him or her get an appropriate diagnosis.
3. Get appropriate treatment for him or her.
Understanding the situation in regard to the possibly
depressed person
Remember that depression is a complex "illness", and not
something just in the mind. So, never ridicule the concerned
person of ...Read the rest of this entry »

Tell me, does this describe you? 'I tried a zillion diets in
fits and starts and was never successful.' Just going on a diet
will not give you a complete healthy persona. I finally paid
attention to what everybody was saying, but I was too lazy to
do.
I added exercise and fitness to the equation. We also need to
stay fit as well as diet to lose weight. Our true wealth is our
health. Isn't it worth your time bring it into peak condition
and maintain it? Diet fitness is all about an accurate mix ...Read the rest of this entry »

i>"If there is one thing that is important for you to know, it
is that every thought, even the most insignificant is a living
reality. Thoughts can even be seen, there are people who can see
them. Of course on the physical plane, a thought is invisible
and intangible, but it is no less real: in its own region and
with its own subtle matter, it is a living, active
being..."(Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov)

Good intentions for weight loss are wonderful. Like a whole lot
of folks, I swore I would start to exercise more, go on a diet,
and lose those extra pesky pounds for good. Months later, I'm
still deciding on the 'best' diet for me, and paying the monthly
gym dues for visits that I am 'just about' to get around to.
What's the hold up? I had the best of intentions to lose weight
and keep it off. I never got started. According to the experts,
I failed because I didn't have a specific, workable, ...Read the rest of this entry »

We are told that 'stress is the #1 killer today', so
stress reduction 'is the #1 life saver today'.
Stress surrounds us constantly, from pressures at work,
your relationships at home, global economics, climate changes
and many others.
It is not stress that kills, but your inability to cope
with stress does. How you cope and adapt to stress can be the
difference from leading a productive and happy life ... to being
unhealthy, tired and burnt out.
But what to do?
There are countless ...Read the rest of this entry »

Aloe Vera is a plant that looks like a cactus, but is actually a
member of the lily family. It grows in Africa, Asia and the
warmer parts of America and Europe. The particular kind of Aloe
Vera used for natural remedies has the Latin name Aloe
barbadensis and its leaves contain a gel that is rich in
therapeutic properties.
Aloe has been used medicinally for over 6,000 years. The ancient
Egyptians used it to heal battle wounds and cure infections. The
early Greeks used it for relieving blisters, ...Read the rest of this entry »

STROKE CAMP: REST, RELAXATION AND RENEWAL By Celise Downs
S'mores. Sleeping bags in pup tents. Fireside stories and
songs. Brave souls going 'polar bear' swimming in a freezing
lake at dawn. These are the memories I have of going to camp.
But the camp I recently attended was different. At this camp, I
was surrounded by survivors: stroke and spinal cord injury
survivors. The July 2005 Stroke Camp at Chapel Rock Church
Conference Center in Prescott, AZ allowed stroke survivors and
their ...Read the rest of this entry »
